July 21, 2020

From July 8th, Cellport Clinic Yokohama (Location: Yokohama City; Director: Rerei Nakayama), a clinic run by Biomaster Inc. (Headquarters: Yokohama City; President: Shogo Miki), a subsidiary of Kaneka Corporation (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Minoru Tanaka), began providing*1 breast reconstruction treatment that uses cultured adipose derived stem cells*2 (referred to below as Cultured CAL™ *3). In order to initiate this Cultured CAL treatment, a treatment plan inspected by Certified Special Committee for Regenerative Medicine of Osaka University was submitted to the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare and was accepted by them on June 2nd.

The newly launched Cultured CAL treatment involves taking a tiny amount of body fat from a patient and then culturing the stem cells included in that fat and adding them to fat that is transplanted. As the amount of fat taken out is small compared to the previous CAL treatment, patients with a smaller percentage of body fat who couldn't receive the previous treatment will be able to take this new treatment. By broadening the options of breast reconstruction, Cultured CALTM will help improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients.

Since opening in 2006, Cellport Clinic Yokohama has been providing treatment using CAL, which was jointly developed with the University of Tokyo as a technology for breast reconstruction for post breast cancer treatment. In future, based on the outcomes of clinical research*4, Cultured CALTM will be utilized as a new way to reconstruct soft tissue for not only post-surgery breast reconstruction, but also for facial degenerative diseases and breast augmentation.

  1. Treatment using Cultured CAL™ is at one's own expense (not covered by health insurance).
  2. Cells that can independently multiply and can also assist in the growth of surrounding tissue.
  3. Acronym for "Cell Assisted Lipotransfer". A medical technology with a high take ratio that uses stem cells derived from a patient's own body fat.
  4. Japan's first clinical research of breast reconstruction that uses cultured adipose derived stem cells, which was carried out from July 2015 after inspection from Osaka University's specifically authorized Regenerative Medicine Committee and the Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare.
